Casa-Nica's picture
Real name:

Casa-Nica was founded to provide volunteer assistance to local NGOs throughout Masaya and other parts of Nicaragua. In partnership with a number of community-based organizations, Casa-Nica’s staff, interns, and volunteers work alongside these groups to provide additional resources and manpower to augment their ongoing projects.

Casa-Nica is directed by Josh Allsup and Elliot Cooper, both of whom have extensive experience in travel, development, and volunteer support. Josh volunteered for several years through Peace Corps in Peru, where he both worked with and helped to develop local NGOs. He later spent time traveling through Central and South America before settling in Nicaragua. Elliot volunteered, taught for, and coordinated programs in Japan, Vietnam, Belize, and Peru, and has traveled throughout Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America.

We are doing something different with our development work because we believe that the most effective way to truly help Nicaragua is by working with and contributing to the pre-existing projects and foundations already created by the Nicaraguan people. Too many foreign NGOs enter into a country and make their own decisions about what is needed, and rarely consult those community leaders who have lived and worked in the country their entire lives. We do not make this mistake. Our funding model and methodology affords us the privilege to stay “string-free” with our projects, which is the way international development work should be done.” ~Casa-Nica

Volunteer and intern placements at Casa-Nica are highly customizable, inviting travelers to focus on one area of interest, or even to combine several projects to create a comprehensive and fulfilling volunteer or intern abroad experience. Programs range from English teaching to zoo assistance, healthcare, agriculture, and more. In addition to the volunteer and intern programs, Casa-Nica offers Spanish language classes at no extra charge.

Students, gap year travelers, professionals, and retirees are all welcome at Casa-Nica.
