Support Team Member at Torre Fuerte Girls' Home

Volunteer at a home for abandoned and abused girls in Arequipa, Peru.

Casa Hogar Torre Fuerte is a home for girls who have been removed from their families due to abandonment or abuse. It is based just outside of the centre of the city of Arequipa, Peru. There are generally between thirty and forty girls living there at any one time aged from 3 to 18 years of age. The state sends girls, but provides very little financial assistance.

As a member of the team at the Torre Fuerte, you will work alongside local staff to support the girls in their care. Responsibilities include domestic tasks as necessary, homework help, playing with the girls, and contributing towards a safe and stable home environment. You are also welcome to get involved with mini-projects and specialist skills training, including handicrafts and English language teaching. This is particularly important with the older girls who may have missed time at school due to their family background.

We are currently developing projects that team members can work on with the girls to support their education and training in order to prepare them for their exit from the home when they turn 18. This is a great opportunity for those wishing to get experience working in a caring role with young people.

Casa Hogar Torre Fuerte is located on the outskirts of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, around 25 minutes by bus from the volunteer accomodation. Arequipa, whose skyline is dominated by volcanos and towering mountains, is famous for its colonial architecture, great food and lively nightlife. The sun shines around 300 days of the year. International travellers are well catered for, but those wishing to see the 'real' Peru will not be disappointed! The Colca Canyon and the floating islands of Los Uros on Lake Titicaca are within easy reach for weekend trips.

We ask that volunteers work five hours per day Monday to Friday. This may vary between the morning and the afternoon as per the requirements of the projct. This includes travel time to the project.

We can help volunteers to find low-cost accommodation, although they are welcome to organise their own accommodation if they wish.

Our volunteer accommodation in Arequipa is located in the 'Honey House for Travellers'. There are different room types to suit your budget, including mini apartments with private bathrooms and kitchen areas, and shared rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. All rooms surround a central courtyard. There is a fast, reliable WiFi connection and hot water available 24 hours per day. Laundry service is available at an extra cost. The honey house in a safe part of town just three blocks from the main square. Shops, bars and restaurants are within easy reach. The projct is around 25 minutes away by public transport.
