Support Teacher at Honofre Benavides School, Cotahuasi Canyon

We are looking for enthusiastic people with a passion for education to work at our school project in a rural region in southern Peru.

As a support teacher you will work alongside a local teacher at our partner school, Colegio Honofre Benavides in the town of Tomepampa, Cotahuasi Canyon. This is a state primary and secondary school with approximately 300 students. Responsibilities include supporting the main teacher, teaching English, supporting individual students, and getting involved in mini projects as appropriate to the needs of the school and the community. This position is ideal for those looking for a summer internship, a year abroad placement, or simply seeking a different way to travel.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get teaching experience in a completely different cultural setting and to spend some time in a little-visited yet fascinating area of Peru. Please note that due to school holidays, this position is available from March - December only.

Tomepampa is in a beautiful location in the spectacular Cotahuasi canyon. Cotahuasi is the deepest canyon in the world and a natural protected area. However, it is some distance from the nearest city which makes it little visited by tourists. This is a remote region and international teachers can help to promote inter-cultural awareness and understanding. Tomepampa is also one in of the poorest parts of southern Peru. We are therefore developing projects that support teachers will work on with the students to help them expand their options and become more active in their own communities.

You will help in classes which take place Monday-Friday between 8.30 am and 2.15. Volunteers support the English language programme in the secondary school, and provide general classroom support to the primary teachers. In the afternoons you are welcome to get involved with homework help sessions and mini-projects, or else take some time to explore your beautiful surroundings.

Our volunteer accommodation in Tomepampa, Cotahuasi, is located in the Casa Primavera guest house with spectaular views of the canyon. Volunteers have private rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. There is hot water available 24 hours per day, and laundry service is available at an extra cost. The project is within walking distance of the accommodation.

Accommodation starts at $7 per night.
