English Teaching & School Support

English Teaching & School Support

EDGE of AFRICA is currently working with a local junior school in Fort Dauphin to whom we provide teaching support and manpower through volunteer involvement. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of this very underpriviliged school assisting the teachers wherever possible. You will help local children to develop important skills. You can rest assured that your efforts will make a lasting difference in the lives you touch and you will be left with a sense of being part of something truly meaningful!

We work hard to ensure that our teaching projects empower local communities. We believe that education is the best gift that you can give a community.
Many Malagasy schools do not have the skills or means to sufficiently train teachers and so local children do not have access to a high standard of education.
Through volunteer participation we hope to improve literacy and numeracy skills and also provide an opportunity for children to participate in after-school homework support.

Location

Fort Dauphin has modernized considerably in recent years with the arrival of international mining activities. The peninsular on which Fort Dauphin is sent is flanked either side by sweeping sandy beaches with good surfing. There are high mountains to the North with Pique St Louis overlooking the town. Most amenities are accessible and there is generally good internet access. There are a few quaint local restaurants to choose from, including a beach bar and a vibey and thriving market.

Fort Dauphin was the first European site in Madagascar, founded by shipwrecked Portuguese sailors who built the old fort near the Ambinanibe River in 1504. However they were soon driven out by the local population and mostly succumbed to disease or killed. In 1642 the French established a trading post at Baie de St Luce but later moved south to establish Fort Dauphin, named after the child prince Dauphin who became Louis XIV.

Given its pleasant climate, magnificent beaches, natural reserves (including several containing lemurs), variety of hotels and that it's only a one hour flight from Antananarivo, some have given Fort Dauphin the title of "la cote d'Azur” (the popular Mediterranean French coast) of Madagascar.
Popular places to visit include Evatraha, Libanona beach, Lokaro, Manafiafy, Nahampoana and Vinanibe
