Volunteer as a Cat Behavior Specialist in Caye Caulker, Belize!

Our partner in Belize, P.A.W. Cat Sanctuary and Humane Society, invites you to spend time socializing with the sanctuary’s domestic cats, which are in need of care and support in addition to the feeding, cleaning, and general attention given by the organization’s Cat Care volunteers.

Volunteers are needed for this project to help new cats adjust to life at the sanctuary, and to help each cat living there stay accustomed to living in the catteries. Those that do not receive much-needed attention often develop behavioral problems, such as spraying, fighting, and hiding from other humans or cats.

One of the sanctuary’s goals is to provide adoptive homes for their cats—and your help in nurturing them will help them become more adoptable to potential rescue families.

As this program is not an ongoing one at the sanctuary, volunteers are considered on a case-by-case basis; you will work with the sanctuary director to determine your schedule and type of project, which will be largely self guided. Please allow several months between your inquiry and prospective start date to help schedule your visit and type of project.

You'll volunteer with P.A.W. Cat Sanctuary and Humane Society, a local organization that provides spaying and neutering services and promotes humane education in Belize. The sanctuary serves as a haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected cats and dogs on the island.

This program is located in Caye Caulker, Belize, a beautiful island just off the mainland. At six miles long by two miles wide, Cay Caulker’s community is tight-knit, yet welcoming of tourists and travelers.

You will spend two hours per day visiting with the sanctuary’s cats, which may include socializing, playing, and cuddling with these rescued animals.

This program lasts two weeks’ minimum—while work begins each day at 6:00am, you may start at 9:00am for the first week as you adjust to the schedule.

You'll stay in the Volunteer Cabana, which sleeps three people at a time and is located just at the shoreline on the beach. This includes:

  • One single bed and a bunk bed set
  • Coffee machine and microwave
  • Bathroom with running (not heated) water attached to the outside of the building
