Volunteer Opportunities Abroad (Cusco Peru and La Antigua Guatemala)
Volunteer in Latin America
Thousands of volunteers have trusted Maximo Nivel’s with their travel and volunteer aspirations. Our volunteer programs and gap year experiences take place in Cusco, Peru; and La Antigua, Guatemala, plus programs in the Sacred Valley and Puerto Maldonado (Peru), and Guatemala City (Guatemala). Experience experience new cultures while helping those in real need.
Volunteer opportunities include:
• Conservation & Environment
• Teaching English
• Healthcare (non-medical)
Volunteer Working with Kids
Volunteering abroad in orphanages can literally be one of the most humbling volunteer experiences offered. Maximo Nivel’s volunteer projects aspire to change these children’s situation by providing caring and nurturing volunteers to work and play with them.
Volunteer Teaching English
Maximo Nivel’s volunteer projects in teaching English offer volunteers ample opportunity to explore day-to-day life in Guatemala and Peru while helping young students improve their English skills. Most volunteers work in the English Learning Rooms at small community centers, orphanages, or shelters for street children.
Volunteer in Conservation Projects
Maximo Nivel offers unique conservation projects including:
• Turtle Conservation Project
• Animal Care
• Environmental Education & Clean Up
• Organic Farming
Projects working in reforestation and agriculture help rural communities and small villages with local projects and volunteers work alongside local inhabitants. Volunteers working in biodiversity inventories, turtle and bird conservation, and other protection projects live either high in the mountains or on the tropical coasts and jungle areas.
Volunteer in Medical/Healthcare Projects
Maximo Nivel’s medical projects provide volunteers with the opportunity to work in hospitals, clinics, assisted living, and other healthcare facilities. Healthcare placements are available for people who are not licensed and/or who are still completing their training.
Volunteer in Construction Projects
Volunteers on construction projects work on repairing or building new homes and schools for orphaned children or for rural villages. At all times, volunteers are supported by Maximo Nivel’s in-country coordinators.
LA ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA
La Antigua is situated at 1,500 m (5,000 ft) above sea level in the central highlands of Guatemala, just 45 minutes south of the capital, Guatemala City. The Central Park is the heart of La Antigua and is bustling with locals and international visitors all year round. The town is most famous for its well preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and colonial ruins—so much so that the entire city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. La Antigua also offers a wide variety of great restaurants and an active night life.
The average temperature in La Antigua ranges from 24-27 ° C (75 -80°F) with rather cool nights due to the higher altitude. Rainy season lasts from May to September, with a month of dry weather in July, called a ‘canicula’. Dry season is from October to April.
La Antigua is easy to explore on foot with everything within a 10-15 minute walk. Motorcycle taxis (‘tuk-tuks’) and regular taxis are also available and can be found at the city center or out in front of most churches.
