Cartago Orphanage

Cartago Orphanage
Cartago Orphanage

The Orphanage of Cartago serves around 30 children ranging from 0 to 12 years. Volunteers assist with daily tasks, including helping to feed the children, playtime and socializing, and with the design of activities and general support of the ladies in charge.

The Orphanages in Costa Rica are attached to the National Orphan Board, even if they are privately administred or public funded.  The Orphanage houses are directed by ladies called ¨aunts¨ that will coordinate every day tasks for the children, including feeding them, help them with school homework, play with them and also give them company while eating, playing or having other free time activities.

The Orphanages' funding is limited and depend on public funds to buy food, school materials and have in some cases not enough staff to cover all the needs of the children. The volunteers are invited to collaborate with the coordinators with these daily activities and other activities they may propose. The volunteers may feel free to organize group activities, murals for the schools and other projects.

Location

The Orphanage is located in Cartago, the old Capital City of Costa Rica, and the third largest city in the country with approximately 450,000 inhabitants. The City of Cartago is home to Our Lady of Angels Basilica, and many other important cultural attractions.

Schedule

Usually from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, but each volunteer's specific schedule will be negotiated and worked out with the General Coordinator.

Accommodations

Homestays include 3 meals a day, room and laundry facilities.
