1. A Uganda Based Not – For- Profit Organization

Africa Sustainable Tourism Care Foundation (ASTCF) is a local Uganda based non-profit organization, that has been established with diverse and holistic approach to promote innovative sustainable tourism practices that are geared to reduce poverty, empower local communities, fight gender inequality, encourage conservation of cultural and natural heritage and foster sustainable development through tourism.

We work directly with communities to understand the obstacles they face and provide practical sustainable solutions specific to their needs. These solutions provide jobs, community capacity building, conservation management, educational opportunities, and, ultimately, the ability for people to better their own lives. However, we understand that tackling sustainability alone can seem like a resource intensive, cost-prohibitive and complex process.

We developed the humanitarian volunteer program where we facilitate career breaks, short term break, team trip, Christian missions, gap years, retirement breaks and expeditions for the benefit and advancement of education and global citizenship, including but not restricted to; training, education, humanitarian relief, sustainable community development, healthcare, community capacity building, construction, wildlife conservation and environmental protection. We have it at heart the desire to encourage and enable communities to thrive, and to give our volunteers the chance to experience adventures while giving back to the local communities. We believe that through the process of volunteering, both the local communities and volunteers alike learn new skills, see the world with fresh eyes, and develop new connections which will last a lifetime.

In regards to our high standards of operation ,nationally ASTCF has strong relationships in collaborating, coordinating and networking with the Uganda Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Uganda Tourism Board, Uganda Wildlife Authority, the Uganda Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development and all other tourism industry stakeholders in Uganda such as , tour agents, tourism bureaus, tourism specialists, conservation, businesses, travelers, along with local communities to develop and implement innovative sustainable tourism development and conservation solutions with a view of empowering local communities and protecting nature for future generation in Uganda and the East African region. And internationally, we give our ALLEGIANCE  both to the LIMA DECLARATION2014 and to  The 2002 Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism. We also embrace the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in all our operations.

Within your project you will have an allocated line manager who will deal with all the day-to-day issues like your accommodation, your finances and your work plan. We then have experienced local project staffs who are available to provide support, training and personal care. We are here 24 / 7 to ensure you have all that you need to make sure your experience is safe, rewarding and exciting!

ASTCF Volunteer Program is structured in such a way to support both volunteers and projects throughout the period of service. For volunteers we work to ensure your safety and security as far as is possible, without infringing on your individual adventure. For our local project staff we provide support, mediation and advice to ensure that their experience of working with international volunteers is a happy and productive one.( A win – win experience).

3. Sustainable Project Investment

Africa Sustainable Tourism Care Foundation (ASTCF) believes passionately in the work our local community partner projects do and so we invest 100% of our profits back into providing practical resources and help for those projects most in need with a particular focus on those poor communities (often rural, poor and economically marginalized). We aim to ensure that the work they do is not reliant and outside resources but can be built up to continue with local staff and focused on the needs of the local community. Volunteering with ASTCF Program is about coming alongside local staff and community members, sharing with each other, learning from each other and growing in deeper understanding of our place in the global community. It is this shared vision that drives our innovative model!

4. Affordable Volunteer Program Costs

While there are gaps in the market with many exorbitant costs being charged by other volunteer abroad organizations, ASTCF is there to fill the gap and maintain its commitment to be a non-profit organization. We work directly with local communities and in partnership with grassroots organizations, and because our staffs are locals, have been raised in the area and know it inside and out, they are in the best position to provide guidance, safe supervision and support to our international volunteers; that means we reduce costs making our projects more affordable.

5. We Promote Responsible tourism

We care about implementing Responsible tourism practices - about 'making places better for the people to live in and for people to visit'. ASTCF takes pride in having built up the organization based on such a policy. We work directly with communities to understand the obstacles they face and provide practical sustainable solutions specific to their needs. These solutions provide jobs, community capacity building, conservation management, educational opportunities, and, ultimately, the ability for people to better their own lives. Our local partners are handpicked for holding the same values and ethical standards in their own organizations. Our aim is fair trade between local communities, ASTCF and you as a traveller. You can be sure that your holiday contributes directly and meaningfully to the communities you visit. We will also ensure you get the necessary information on how to be a responsible tourist in the destination you will be going to.

Most of our holidays take you off the beaten track and give you an insight into local people's heritage and the culture and daily life of the community that you are visiting. It doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your beach or a sightseeing trip into the cities. Rather it is about uniqueness, authenticity and getting a glimpse into life as it really is. Our travellers often say that we offer holidays that they would not be able to put together themselves or get elsewhere. Remember; we tailor-make holidays and your volunteer placement – so it is up to you what you want to experience.
